TAS Interruption – Update (8 May 2012)

ICANN is targeting 22 May 2012 as the intended reopening date for the TLD Application System. It is anticipated that the system would remain open for five business days and close on 30 May. This takes account of the 28 May Memorial Day holiday in the United States.

We took TAS offline following a technical glitch that may have allowed some users to see some file names and user names of other users. We have seen no evidence that any TAS user intentionally did anything wrong in order to be able to see other users’ information.

We have met our commitment to provide notice to all users on or before 8 May 2012 by sending out notifications today.

The large majority of users are unaffected by the glitch. We continue to review the extensive database of system logs and system traffic, and any new and relevant information that emerges from this analysis will be shared with applicants in a timely way.

Even as late as yesterday, 7 May 2012, our packet-level research uncovered a new set of instances (in addition to those previously announced) where another applicant might have viewed a set of system-generated file names. It is possible that further analysis will also show that some of the parties that we have notified were not affected, but notice was provided out of an abundance of caution.

We thank everyone for your patience and apologize for the inconvenience the delay has caused.

Quasar Jailbreak Tweak Brings Window-based Multitasking To iPad

One of the most anticipated features of 2010?s iOS 4 (which launched alongside the iPhone 4) was multitasking. The feature was one of the few real advantages held over iOS by platforms like Palm’s webOS. As it turned out, though, what iOS users got with iOS 4 was not exactly multitasking – not the kind of multitasking they were used to on their desktop computers. Instead, when the user left an application, the OS saved that application’s state and suspended it, allowing a user to pick up where they left off rather than having to restart the app from scratch

While definitely a welcome change, iOS 4?s feature didn’t quite reach full multitasking. Now, those with jailbroken iPads can get true window-based multitasking. Quasar is a jailbreak tweak now available in the Cydia store. For those not up on the lingo, a tweak changes the behavior of the operating system, allowing you to do things like put five icons on your iPhone dock or turn off bluetooth and wifi from the Notification Center. While there are apps in the Cydia store, the bulk of Cydia’s content is actually tweaks of various kinds.

Quasar puts your apps in windows, and allows you to put multiple windows on your iPad screen at once. You can easily switch between apps. You can also move and resize your windows, change their orientation, close them, or make them full-screen. You can also run iPhone-only apps on your iPad without having to either double their size or have large amounts of useless black space on your screen.

Meet KegDroid, Your Android-Powered Beer Dispenser

Paul Carff was bored with drinking beer, so he decided to take on a project to make the whole experience more enjoyable. What he came up with is KegDroid, which is pretty much what it sounds like: an Android-powered Kegerator. Yeah, awesome is putting it mildly here.

Carff is a Googler, current Developer Advocate and former Engineering Manager to be exact, so this little device has probably made him pretty popular around the office.

It’s pretty simple. The whole thing is built upon on a Motorola Xoom tablet running Ice Cream Sandwich. In order to get the KegDroid to pour you any delicious beer, you have to be authenticated. The app does this via NFC badges. Once the system authenticates you, your Google+ profile will pop up on the screen. A couple of flow sensors housed in the guts of the machine make sure you get the perfect pour.

SiriusXM App For Android Updated With 5 Hour Replay

Sirius XM Radio announced today that a free update to their SiriusXM Android app has been released. The company claims the new app, which can now be downloaded in the Google Play app marketplace, will give subscribers to their service more control over how to listen to SiriusXM content.

“This updated and enhanced SiriusXM Internet Radio App for Android, the top smartphone platform in the U.S., now gives current and future subscribers access to more programming, including more live sports play-by-play, and more control over when and where they listen to their favorite SiriusXM channels and programs,” said Jim Meyer, President of Operations and Sales at SiriusXM. “We are pleased to bring these new and exciting features to our subscribers, and we will continue to evolve our SiriusXM Internet Radio offerings this year by adding greater functionality on smartphones, mobile devices and online.”

The biggest change in this update is “Start Now” which allows subscribers to select and listen to content previously broadcast on many channels, up to 5 hours in the past. “Tune Start” will now automatically start a song from its beginning when tuning in to a station, and the app now allows users to pause live radio, replay a song or segment, and skip forward. In addition, the app now includes a “Show Finder,” which is a programming guide that offers a complete list of programming up to a week ahead. Users can set reminder alerts for themselves using the “Show Finder.”

SiriusXM claims the update, which includes a design overhaul for the app, is part of the rollout of what they are calling SiriusXM 2.0, a service they hope will span “hardware, software, audio, and data services.” It is interesting to see companies whose business models have become outdated adapt to changing technologies. With satellite radio all but defunct, SiriusXM will have to compete with online radio models such as Pandora and Spotify, and these features seem to be a step in the right direction. Even so, to stand a chance the company will have to keep Howard Stern happy.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood Wants Nationwide Ban On Cellphone Use While Driving

In today’s installment of the “good luck with that” files, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray La Hood has come out in favor of an all-out ban of the use of cellphones while driving. This would prohibit anyone from using their device for any reason – calls, texting, Facebooking – while driving on a road in the United States.

This call came while La Hood was speaking at the Texas Distracted Driving Summit, via Reuters.

“Everyone has a cell phone and too many of us think it is OK to talk on our phones while we are driving,” he said. He went on to call distracted driving an “epidemic” and said that it’s necessary that police have “the opportunity to write tickets when people are foolishly thinking they can drive safely or use a cell phone and text and drive.”

Remote desktop server

Microsoft released a patch that is critical for any Internet-facing Remote Desktop server or computer. For example, Terminal Servers and office PCs that users connect to from home could be affected. The exploit allows a remote user to either crash the computer or obtain access (take it over).

Today the finder of the bug released his exploit proof-of-concept code, which should greatly accelerate malware programmers’ efforts to exploit it. Therefore we recommend all computers be patched. ITS is already handling computers for all ITS TeamCare clients; others should install KB2621440 and/or KB2667402, as prompted by Windows Update. A restart is necessary after the update is installed.

AdWords Gets Advanced Sign-in Security

Anyone who has ever lost control of their online accounts can truly appreciate this latest step taken by Google andAdWords to double protect the security of your accounts with them. Google points out that using the same password on multiple sites puts you at an even higher risk of account take overs. They don’t want you to be victims and so they’ve done something about.

Essentially what they have done is develop a two step security pass system that protects your accounts like a bank does. Not only do you need to enter your password, but you also need to have a pin number. This makes it a lot harder for hackers to steal your sensitive personal information or make transactions with one of your accounts.

Check out Google’s video on the two step verification process:

Here’s what Google’s AdWords blog site had to say about the optional new security service:

We continually strive to develop solutions to prevent security breaches like these. So last year, we developed an advanced opt-in security feature for Google Accounts called 2-step verification. This feature makes your Google Account (and thereby also your AdWords account) significantly more secure by helping to verify that you’re the real owner of your account. It does this by requiring two independent factors for authentication, much like you might see on your banking website: your password, plus a code obtained using your phone

To make your AdWords account more secure, you can apply this 2-step verification to your Google account. While this is an extra step, it’s one that significantly improves the security of your AdWords account because it requires the powerful combination of both something you know—your username and password—and something that only you should have—your phone.

It sounds like a good idea to me. In this day and age having your accounts highjacked can be as devastating as having your wallet stolen. I’m glad Google’s taking these measures to provide their customers with a little extra piece of mind. If you’ve ever had your accounts taken over, you know what I mean.
